Destinations in Europe

Berlin - The Berlin Wall Memorial & Berlin Wall Museum - The DDR Museum - Hohenschönhausen Stasi Memorial - Bauhaus-Archiv - East Side Gallery - The Brandenburg Gate - The Bundestag - The Ritter Chocolate Museum - The Jewish Museum Berlin - Marheinekehalle Indoor Market - Berliner Fernsehturm (TV Tower)

A vast array of museums are available to visit whilst in Berlin, with something for every subject group.

The Berlin Wall Memorial is a great place to start on any school trip, impressing upon students the scale of the division of Berlin between 1961 to 1989, providing them with context about the city's history.

The Berlin Wall Museum itself would add further light on the desperation of the divided city, with interactive displays telling them the story of how the wall was built and the differences between life in East Germany compared to West Germany.

They will also come to understand how the wall has impacted culture in the city and still inspires artists today.

Visiting the DDR Museum will truly bring to life the reality of living in East Germany, with the museum allowing students to handle objects in an authentic German home and interact as much as possible with the displays – this is a fully immersive experience showing students first-hand the experiences of everyday life in a socialist state.

What they will learn

Subjects available: History, Design Technology, Languages, Art, Law Politics

Along with immersing themselves in the history of the Berlin Wall, students can learn about the political persecution of prisoners at the Hohenschönhausen Stasi Memorial, a historically preserved prison. This is a great visit for history and politics students as they will be given a tour of the prison by former inmates who will provide first-hand accounts of their experiences of life in the prison and the variety of reasons for their internment there.

Art and design and technology students are spoilt for choice in terms of museums in Berlin, with the Bauhaus-Archiv a great option for teaching them about the history of design, architecture and art.

Another must-see is the East Side Gallery - the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall that was decorated by artists from around the world in 1990. The vibrancy and passion of these artists is sure to leave an impression on your students.

Languages students will have the opportunity to take lessons with professional, native-speaking teachers with the content designed around your curriculum. After this, why not take them to see the Brandenburg Gate or the Bundestag (formerly Reichstag) building?

Politics students would benefit from a visit to see this historic building as well, as it remains the seat of German political power.
